A femoral catheter is a tube inserted into the femoral vein or artery in the groin for rapid, critical vascular access, used in emergencies for dialysis, fluids, meds (like vasopressors), monitoring blood pressure (arterial), or cardiac procedures, offering quick access but carrying higher infection/clot risks than other sites, usually removed ASAP, often placed with ultrasound guidance.
Emergent Access: When peripheral IVs fail, especially during cardiac arrest or severe trauma.
Hemodialysis/Plasmapheresis: Urgent need when other access (fistula) isn't ready or fails.
Critical Care: Administering irritating meds (vasopressors) or large fluid volumes.
Monitoring: Continuous BP monitoring (arterial) or pressure monitoring.
